First Grade Department Goals

In First Grade at Barkley Bridge Elementary, we focus on growing confident, curious, and capable learners. This is a year full of exciting progress as students build on their Kindergarten foundation and become more independent both academically and socially.

Our goals include:

• Strengthening Reading and Writing Skills
  We help students develop fluency, comprehension, and a love for reading, while also learning to express their thoughts clearly through writing.

• Expanding Math Understanding
  Students explore number sense, addition and subtraction strategies, place value, and problem-solving in fun and meaningful ways.

• Encouraging Responsibility and Independence
  We support students in becoming more self-directed—learning to manage materials, follow routines, and take ownership of their learning.

• Fostering Positive Social Skills
  Through daily interactions and classroom activities, we promote kindness, cooperation, and respectful communication.

• Creating a Safe and Engaging Classroom
  Our goal is to build a learning environment where students feel safe, supported, and excited to come to school every day.
