Second Grade Department Goals

Second Grade at Barkley Bridge Elementary is a year of big growth—academically, socially, and emotionally. Our goal is to support and challenge students as they gain confidence, build skills, and develop a love for learning.

Here’s what we focus on:

• Becoming Stronger Readers and Writers
  We build reading fluency and comprehension while encouraging students to think critically about texts. Writing expands to include narratives, opinion pieces, and informative writing.

• Deepening Math Understanding
  Students master addition and subtraction facts, begin working with larger numbers, and explore concepts like place value, time, money, and basic geometry.

• Strengthening Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking
  We encourage students to ask questions, explain their thinking, and approach challenges with confidence.

• Building Independence and Responsibility
  Second graders take on more responsibility for their learning, developing study habits and classroom routines that set them up for success.

• Growing Social Skills and Character
  We continue to nurture kindness, respect, and teamwork, helping students become thoughtful members of our school community.
